Overcoming Endometriosis
This is Charlie’s personal story of healing. I met Charlie when she came on one of my workshops. Charlie suffered with Endometriosis for 25 years. Her story explains the sudden change that took place once she had guidance and made some fundamental changes in her life. No matter what course of treatment you decide upon it is really important to do some physical, emotional and mental clearing to aid your recovery and as a preventative measure. If you want to read more about this then follow the link - tell me more.
It has been estimated that 2 million women have endometriosis in the UK. For anyone who does not know what Endometriosis is I have put some basic information next. Follow the link here if you wish to go straight to Charlie’s story.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis occurs when the tissue which lines the uterus - the endometrium - is found elsewhere in the body. This can be in the abdomen, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel, vagina, cervix or vulva. Less commonly endometrial growths may also be found in the lung, arm or thigh.
In the uterus, endometrial tissue builds up during the menstrual cycle, and then breaks down and sheds off during a period. This keeps the lining of the uterus healthy and ready to nourish a developing foetus. However, when the tissue acts in the same way outside the uterus it can cause problems. Menstrual blood can be easily shed from the uterus, not from elsewhere in the body. This can result in internal bleeding and inflammation.
Who gets it?
Endometriosis can occur at any time from the onset of menstrual periods until the menopause. It is extremely rare for it to be first diagnosed after the menopause, but not unknown. For the majority of women the condition ceases at the menopause.
What are the symptoms?
- Pain before and during periods
- Pain with sex
- Infertility
- Fatigue
- Painful urination during periods
- Painful bowel movements during periods
- Diarrhoea, constipation, nausea
Many women with endometriosis may also suffer from allergies and sensitivity to certain chemicals.
How is it diagnosed?
The only way to confirm endometriosis is to carry out a laparoscopy. This involves using a laparoscope - a surgical instrument with a fibre optic system which brings light into the abdomen. Using this instrument doctors are able to pinpoint the location, size and extent of the growths.
How is it treated?
There is no medical cure for the condition. However, there are range of treatment options, depending on the woman's age and whether she wants to have children.
- Hormone therapy can be used to stop ovulation, and shrink the endometrial growths. However, there are side effects.
- Sometimes it is possible to use surgery to remove growths. This is either done by laparoscopy or by a larger open operation - a laparotomy.
- For women with severe endometriosis radical surgery may be the last resort. Hysterectomy can be done with or without removing the ovaries. But if the ovaries are left in place then the chance of recurrence is increased with some women needing a further operation to remove the ovaries at a later date.
- There are many alternative therapies and treatments and whilst these are worth exploring it is important to stay in touch with your doctor. However, making positive lifestyle changes (e.g improved nutrition, physical, emotional and mental well-being) can only improve your life as well as possibly reducing your symptoms or eradicating the problem.
ENDOMETRIOSIS AND OVERCOMING IT.
(Charlie's Personal Story)
Since the age of 12 (25 years) I have suffered with endometriosis. I remember my first attack, and my teacher having to drive me home from school most concerned, as she had no idea what was wrong and I looked like death.
The pain was like somebody hacking my lower abdomen with a knife, the diarrhoea and sickness, that ice cold feeling coming over you, being sick and then just passing out and finding myself on the bathroom floor or wherever I happened to be at the time, it was awful. The pain was so intense my body would just shut down in order to cope.
My mum took me to see various doctors who just said “oh don’t worry; she will grow out of it!” The years went by and the attacks got worse, you name it I had tried everything and sometimes it would help for a while, but nothing ever lasted. My life was revolving around my periods. I could never plan any events when my period was due, as I never knew how ill I was going to be. Ten days a month I would feel well and the rest I felt awful. I was now so desperate I went to see a surgeon who did a laparoscopy, took away some tissue and said I was fine. The next month I was ill again.
I was desperate to have a baby and doctors said to me just get pregnant and that will sort it out for you. Easier said than done and for years I tried without success. So after 25 years of suffering and giving up on the idea of ever having a baby, I booked myself in for a hysterectomy. I was that desperate and nobody seemed to understand I had a problem. Just before going in I went to my hairdressers and she told me about this chap called Keith who may be able to help me, I thought this is my last chance, and so I went to see him.
Keith changed my diet did reflexology and gave me various supplements to take, I had my first period without sickness, which was great and within six weeks I was pregnant. My pregnancy was wonderful, I had never felt so well in all my life, plus it was heaven not having periods for nine months, I gave birth naturally aged 39 to a beautiful healthy little girl.
I no longer suffer at all and I am healed. I wanted to share my story with you all, as I am well aware many women suffer as I did and you don’t need to. Please don’t give up there is hope and help at hand. Your body has a wonderful way of healing itself given the correct nutrition, supplements and guidance and surgery is not always necessary. I wish you all the very best and thank you for reading my story, Good luck.
